This is PEBL's version of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, sometimes referred to as simply WCST. It is a test long thought to involve reasoning, learning, and executive control. It is particularly sensitive to inability to shift set. We refer to our implementation of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test as "Berg's Card Sorting Test" because the more common name, the "Wisconsin Card Sorting Test" is a registered trademark, and it was first developed by Esta Berg at the University of Wisconsin.

Versions of the test are located in battery\bcst\cardsort.pbl and battery\bcst\bcst-64.pbl

Initial versions of the BCST used keyboard input; now input can be performed either with the mouse or keyboard, by setting gUseMouse from 1 to 0.

Also, this test is localizeable into a particular language by editing a labels.txt file, located in the translations\ subdirectory. Translate the text strings in labels-en.txt, rename the file to label-XX.txt (where XX is whatever language you are translating to), and edit line 60 of the test to change the name of the file it is reading in. For languages that require using a different font, load fonts on the lines around line 500.

There are currently two versions of the test distributed in separate files in the Test battery. cardsort.pbl is the standard two-deck version, and bcst-64.pbl is a specific single-deck version that has the same sequence of cards/trials on every run.

  • repeats affects how many times through the deck
  • runlength (default is 5) determines how many correct sorts are needed before the rule changes.
  • useCanonical determines whether the 4 stimulus cards are thesame as in Berg's original, or whether they are generated randomly.
  • useReduced eliminates ambiguous cards, as described by Nelson.

Data are stored in bcst-<gsubnum>.txt. Detailed report stored in bcst-report-<gsubnum>.txt. Report calculates trials accuracy, number incorrect, perseverations on prior rule, and number of achieved categories.

Notes:
Stats 1-11 are standard statistics commonly
   reported.  #1 contains both categories completed (standard stat)
   and categories experienced, whether or not the last one was
   actually completed.  Means are computed based on categories
   experienced (not categories completed), and perseverative means
   based on categories experienced AFTER the first category usually a
   maximum of 8.  Total and percent for 1-11 are computed like the
   commonly-reported stats, to the best of our knowledge. #12,
   Perseverative runs, computes the number of error perseverations in
   a row at the beginning of each new category.
